Nicholas Joseph Fury is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a master spy, former leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), and a key figure in the Marvel Universe.
Fury originated as a World War II veteran, known for his cigar-chomping toughness and leadership of the Howling Commandos. This original version primarily battled Nazi forces and other Axis powers.
Later retconning revealed Fury's prolonged lifespan was due to the "Infinity Formula", slowing his aging process dramatically.
